Things Seen in Japan
Published in 1907, ages ago, and was charmed by the Western author’s insightful and admiring descriptions of Japan only a half-century after being opened to the West. Adding to this look into the past is the inclusion of 50 black and white plates portraying scenes and people of al classes. The author’s conclusion? The happy and content Japanese people’s devotion to ancestors and country will make them fearsome warriors as they enter the modern age. Prescient, indeed. (Lorry Chwazik)
