This attractive edition is illustrated by the Scottish graphic artist, Harold Robert Millar (1864-1942), who illustrated fantasy and children’s literature.
The title page in red and black, Illustrated by six plates, including frontispiece, dated 1899. Bound in blue cloth, decorated with art nouveau designs, gilt. A littel wear to extremities, dulling of the spine and browning of edges, with some spotting largely confined to the flyleaves and preliminaries, otherwise a very good copy.

Satirical novel of Persia in the Qajar dynasty. James Justinian Morier (c1780-1849), born in Ottoman Smyrna of a Levantine Merchant family and served as a diplomat in Persia and later Mexico. His 1812 account of his travels and experiences in the Middle East was followed by the two Hajji Baba stories, of which this is the first, in 1824 and 1828. The biographical introduction discusses the authors career and the impact of the novels. A Hollywood film of the title was released in 1954.
