British New Guinea was annexed by Queensland (acting on behalf of the British Colonies in Australia, and New Zealand) in 1883 and was taken over as an Australian Territory, and officially called Papua in 1905-06 after the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia (January 1, 1901).
