Domestic Cookery for the Use of Private Families by Maria Eliza Ketelby Rundell is a foundational work in English culinary literature, first published in the early 19th century. Intended primarily for middle-class households, the book was designed to guide new housekeepers—particularly young women—through the essentials of managing a home with practicality and economy.
Rundell’s approach goes beyond a simple collection of recipes. While the book includes detailed instructions for preparing soups, meats, fish, game, desserts, preserves, and more, it also offers valuable advice on household management. Topics such as meal planning, budgeting, the use of leftovers, and supervising domestic staff are treated with clarity and a tone of gentle authority.
Originally written for her daughters, Rundell’s work quickly became a bestseller and a trusted manual in British households. Its success stemmed from its accessible language, practical organization, and a strong emphasis on frugality without sacrificing quality. It remained influential throughout the 19th century and helped set the standard for domestic guides that followed.
Domestic Cookery reflects both the domestic values and social expectations of its time, offering modern readers insight into the daily life and culinary practices of early 19th-century England.
