Coronation Everest is James Morris’s account of the 1953 British expedition that achieved the first successful ascent of Mount Everest. Morris, reporting for The Times, was embedded with the expedition led by Colonel John Hunt. On 29 May 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit.
The title reflects the fact that news of the ascent reached Britain in time for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953, linking the achievement symbolically with a new Elizabethan era. Morris famously encoded the (???) and arranged for it to be transmitted discreetly to London.
The book is valued not only as a mountaineering record but also for its vivid literary style and portrayal of the personalities, hardships, and national significance surrounding the historic climb.
